UMRAH DEPOSITS · INDONESIA
Paid in full. Flying in eleven months.
Umrah is sold on deposit. A family pays twenty to thirty million rupiah a person, often a year ahead, and the agency uses that money to hold seats and rooms. That is how the trade has always worked and it is not, by itself, dishonest.
Where the money stands during those months
| The pilgrim | Has paid. Holds a receipt and a departure date. |
|---|---|
| The agency | Holds the cash. Owes a trip that has not been bought yet. |
| The airline | Has been paid nothing until tickets are actually issued. |
| The hotel | Has been paid nothing until rooms are actually confirmed. |
For eleven months the customer is an unsecured creditor of a small travel company, without knowing that is what they have become.
THE PATTERN
Collapse is arithmetic, not theft.
When an agency fails it is rarely because someone ran off. It is a price that only worked while the next batch of deposits kept arriving, and then it did not. The money is gone before anyone notices, because nothing in the arrangement ever marked a deposit as belonging to the pilgrim rather than to the business.
We would rather hear one real story than fifty feature requests.
Write in Indonesian or English. If you have been caught by an agency that failed, or you run one and think this would make your life harder, both are worth knowing.
